History of the Manitoba Coin Club
The Manitoba Coin Club was founded in 1954, and became a Charter Member of the Canadian Numismatic Association in 1955. We are the oldest coin club west of the Ottawa River. The objectives of the Club were and remain today to “ Promote the Science of Numismatics, to aid its members in the study, acquisition and exhibition of numismatic materials and to co-operate with all numismatic organizations.” Our first Executive Body consisted of Mr. E. Vincent, President, Mr. Harry Taylor, Vice President, Mr. Fred Steele, Treasurer, and Mr. J.H. Boux, Secretary. Monthly meetings were held in the Winnipeg Free Press Building at Carlton St. and Portage Avenue. Within a year, the club membership grew to a few dozen members including a few women. A very long term and active member was Ann Zuk. Soon we Incorporated as a not for profit organization listed with the Corporations Act of Manitoba. At meetings, talks were given on a variety of issues and members collections were displayed for all to see. There was considerable vest pocket dealing. Many club members were active in sponsoring Coin Shows which drew dealers and collectors from across Canada and the United States. We have sponsored the Canadian Numismatic Association Convention twice, in 1966 and 1982, both extremely well attended show. The Manitoba Coin Club has a rich background of dedicated numismatists, and has inspired many people to excellence. We remember the activities of an 11 year old collector who attended all of the shows with Mr. Boux. Ian Laing, a stalwart member of the club has become an international and highly respected dealer. Harry Taylor, Nick Gerbinski, and Somer James produced an early illustrated catalogue of Canadian decimals, tokens and paper money, and James Astwood authored an excellent book on Canadian Trade Tokens. Recently, Kyle Mutcher has brought renewed interest into the club with his hand made tokens of gold, silver, and bi-metals.
